Halloween 2011: FRANKENBERRY!

Introduced by General Mills Cereal in 1971, this advertising icon is still around today pimping his sugary sweet cereal every October, along with his pals Count Chocula and Boo Berry.

It took me about 6 weeks to put this guy together from scratch. He was really very mobile...just not very fast. And he included a pretty hefty sound system (custom music tracks + sound effects), sound-responsive electro-luminescent wiring, a dozen strobe lights, and some sweet dance moves.

As always, Frankenberry was accompanied on 6th street by the beautiful blinking "Bride of Frankenberry."

43 batteries in all, a bit heavy, but totally worth it.

Hey great costume...this might be redundant at this time but what kind of sound system did you use? I've been trying to hook up something portable that is loud but not too heavy...thanks!

Thanks, Michael!
It was a struggle between size, weight, volume and price. I ended up going to Goodwill (a second-hand thrift store) and buying a cheap, used home stereo with detachable speakers that ran on 8 "D" batteries. I then connected an iPod Shuffle to a cassette adapter and pugged it into the stereo. I was able to feel the buttons on the shuffle, and switch between audio tracks as well as control volume. I connected the main part of the stereo to my back, and put each speaker up into a shoulder facing forward. It was kind of heavy, but totally worth it!

I've seen a lot of costumes in the past years that had some kind of PA/voice distorter system in them. The best info I could get from one of them was he built something out of a PS3 Soundboard (not the game)and another had a pa so loud you could hear him from two blocks away..did you make that cool track?

Hey what kind of prizes do they give away at 6th street? Did you win in Franken Berry?

Just about every bar on 6th Street has a contest of some sort. I've won prizes ranging from a free CD of the band that was playing (lame) to $500. Some bars pay out more, but I've stopped doing the contests. You get stuck hidden in one bar all night if you want to compete. Then it's up to the drunks in the bar to decide if your costume was a success or not. I prefer staying out on the street and seeing peoples faces all night as they run up and take their pictures. That's what it's all about!

That is very true...I've done well in contests though besides the drunks and had won $5000 in an exorcist costume! Have you ever considered selling Frank?

Cool! Do you have pictures of your costumes posted anywhere? I'd love to see them.
The Frankenberry costume has a seat of honor in my new studio. But I still have all of the original plaster casts, so if anyone ever had a serious interest, I could build a duplicate one from scratch! Maybe even with a few upgrades.
